Eckhart was born in Cupertino, California, on March 12, 1968, to Mary Martha Lawrence, a poet, writer, and artist, and James Conrad Eckhart, a computer executive.
He comes from a family of three brothers.
His father is German-Russian, and his mother is of English, German, Scots-Irish, and Scottish origin.
He grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he performed a two-year mission in France and Switzerland.
Following his father’s employment in information technology, Eckhart’s family moved to the United Kingdom in 1981.
During their time in the United Kingdom, the family lived in towns like Cobham, Ripley, and Walton-on-Thames in Surrey, England.
Education
Eckhart began his acting career at American Community School, where he played Charlie Brown in a school production.
Eckhart relocated to Australia in 1985 and lived in Sydney, where he spent his senior year of high school at the American International School of Sydney.
Eckhart dropped out of school in the fall of his senior year to work at the Warringah Mall movie theatre.
Through a professional education course, he eventually received his diploma.
Eckhart was able to spend a year surfing in Hawaii and France, as well as skiing in the Alps, as a result of this.

Eckhart made his professional debut in the Mormon-themed film Godly Sorrow while attending Brigham Young University. He met director/writer Neil LaBute at this time, and Eckhart was cast in several of LaBute’s original pieces.
Neil LaBute approached Eckhart in 1997 about starring in a film adaptation of LaBute’s stage drama In the Company of Men.
He played the self-absorbed brother of an autistic lady who was cured by surgery in Molly, a romantic comedy-drama in which he featured alongside Elisabeth Shue in 1999.
Eckhart rose to prominence in Steven Soderbergh’s drama Erin Brockovich in 2000 as George, a ponytailed, goateed biker.
After Erin Brockovich, Eckhart featured alongside Renée Zellweger in Neil LaBute’s Nurse Betty (2000).
Returning to the cinema in 2005, Eckhart starred in Neverwas as a therapist who accepts a position at a decrepit mental hospital where his father was once treated (Nick Nolte).
The film was never given a full theatrical release and was instead released on DVD in 2007.

During the making of In the Company of Men, Eckhart met actress Emily Cline and they became engaged, but they divorced in 1998.
In interviews, he has always been hesitant to discuss his personal life. From 2006 to 2007, Eckhart dated Kristyn Osborn, a songwriter, and member of SHeDAISY.
He made an appearance in the video for the group’s song “I’m Taking the Wheel.”
Eckhart has stated that hypnosis assisted him in quitting drinking, smoking, and partying and that in his spare time he enjoys amateur photography.
