Career
Where the Heart Is and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was Keaton’s first television appearances, both on Pittsburgh public television (1975).
Keaton traveled from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles to audition for numerous TV roles. He appeared in a number of well-known television series, including Maude and The Mary Tyler Moore Hour.
With films like Johnny Dangerously, Gung Ho, The Squeeze, and The Dream Team, Keaton was pigeonholed as a comedy lead during this time, but he sought to switch to dramatic leads as early as 1984, portraying a hockey player in Touch and Go, which was stalled until 1986.
1988 was a watershed moment in Keaton’s career, as he landed two huge unorthodox parts that forever altered his image in the eyes of moviegoers.
Tim Burton selected Keaton once again as the eponymous comic book character in 1989’s Batman, giving him a big boost to his career.
According to Les Daniels’ reference book Batman: The Complete History, when Keaton was first considered for the role of Batman, he expected the picture to be comparable to the 1960s television series starring Adam West.
Keaton returned to the role in the sequel Batman Returns (1992), which was also a critical hit.
Throughout the 1990s, Keaton remained active, starring in films such as Pacific Heights, One Good Cop, My Life, and the star-studded Shakespearean comedy Much Ado About Nothing.
In the early 2000s, Keaton starred in a number of films, including Life From Baghdad (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe), First Daughter (in which he played the President of the United States), White Noise, and Herbie: Fully Loaded, all of which were met with mixed reviews.
Keaton portrays real-life CIA counterintelligence head James Jesus Angleton in the 2007 TV miniseries The Company, which was set during the Cold War.
In the 2014 RoboCop remake, he portrays OmniCorp CEO Raymond Sellars as a more active enemy, kidnapping RoboCop’s wife and kids and forcing Joel Kinnaman’s character to strive to overcome the 4th directive.
Keaton played the antagonist The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, but was unable to reprise his part as Chick Hicks in Disney/Cars Pixar’s 3 due to scheduling conflicts, and was replaced by Bob Peterson.
In the Netflix biographical drama film Worth, Keaton played American lawyer Kenneth Feinberg in 2021.
Keaton received the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a television movie or limited series onstage at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on February 27, 2022, for Hulu’s Dopesick at the 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.
