Heath Andrew Ledger was born in Perth, Western Australia, on April 4, 1979, to Sally Ramshaw, a French teacher, and Kim Ledger, a racing driver and mining engineer whose family owned and operated the Ledger Engineering Foundry.

His parents divorced when he was eleven years old, having separated when he was 10 years old.

Ledger was a chess enthusiast who had competed in tournaments since he was a child. He frequently played chess with other chess enthusiasts in Washington Square Park as an adult. Ledger was a supporter of the West Coast Eagles, an Australian rules football team headquartered in Perth that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL).
Ledger was an “obsessive” photographer who enjoyed capturing stills and then painting, sketching or painting over them with nail polish.
