Leah Van Dale was born in Spencer, Massachusetts on October 23, 1987.
She is the daughter of Paul Van Dale, a former professional wrestler and mixed martial artist who performed as a jobber for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now known as WWE) in the 1980s and 1990s, making her a second-generation WWE Superstar.
Van Dale is of Dutch and Italian ancestry.
Van Dale was a New England Patriots cheerleader for three seasons, finishing in 2010.
She was a Laker Girl during the 2010–2011 season after successfully auditioning for the Los Angeles Lakers dance squad.

Career
Van Dale sought to be a member of WWE Tough Enough in 2010 but dropped out after getting accepted as a Laker Girl and relocating to Los Angeles. Van Dale acquired a deal with WWE in June 2013, and in late September, she was sent to the company’s developmental division NXT. She then changed her ring name to Carmella.
Carmella made her NXT debut on September 4, 2014, in a segment with Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady in which she played a hairdresser.
Carmella has beaten Blue Pants twice before losing to her on the January 1, 2015 edition of NXT when Amore made a diversion.
Carmella made her main roster debut for the SmackDown brand a week after being recruited to the brand as part of the 2016 WWE draught on July 19, confronting the brand’s female talents before being stopped by Eva Marie.
Carmella made her WrestleMania debut on April 2, 2017, but was unsuccessful in a six-pack challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

In WWE, Van Dale was dating fellow wrestler William Morrissey, best known as Big Cass.
She began dating fellow WWE employee Matthew Polinsky, better known as Corey Graves, in 2019. On April 7, 2022, the two married.
Van Dale is a personal trainer and a qualified fitness teacher. Van Dale has always been a fan of professional wrestling and grew up idolizing Miss Elizabeth.
Van Dale created her own wine line, Capo Cagna, on February 3, 2020, and on June 11, 2020, she and Matthew Polinsky (better known as WWE commentator Corey Graves) debuted a weekly podcast, Bare With Us, in which the two address various challenges surrounding relationships, including their own.
