Career

After becoming a fan of wrestlers like Keiji Mutoh, Satoru Sayama, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Antonio Inoki, Akira Maeda, Nobuhiko Takada, Masakatsu Funaki, Volk Han, and Minoru Suzuki, Urai decided to pursue a new career in professional wrestling.

She worked at AtoZ for the first half of her career before resigning on March 19, 2006, owing to chronic nephritis.

Urai returned to professional wrestling on September 22, 2007, after a year and a half away, and performed as a freelancer for promotions including Ice Ribbon, JWP Joshi Puroresu, and NEO Japan Ladies Pro-Wrestling.

Kana and Takahashi defeated Hiroyo Matsumoto and Kyoko Inoue for the NEO Tag Team Championship on October 10, 2009, Kana’s first professional wrestling championship.

Kana won the 2011 Catch the Wave event by defeating Aysumi Kurihara in the finals on July 24, 2011.

Kana competed in the 2013 Dual Shock Wave event alongside Yumi Ohka from September 1 to October 6.

Kana reached the semi-finals of the 2015 Catch the Wave tournament in July 2015, but she was eliminated by eventual tournament champion Yumi Ohka.

Urai attended WWE’s NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn event in Brooklyn, New York on August 22, 2015. Rumors that she had signed with WWE were quickly verified during a press conference in Tokyo on September 8, making her the first female Japanese wrestler to contract with the organization since Bull Nakano in 1994.

Asuka competed in a battle royal to decide the number one challenger for Bayley’s NXT Women’s Championship on January 13, 2016, episode of NXT; she was eliminated second-to-last by Eva Marie.

Asuka retained her championship on August 19, 2017, at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn III, defeating the returning Ember Moon.

Asuka won the inaugural women’s Royal Rumble match on January 28, 2018, after entering at number 25 and eliminating her old rival Ember Moon and finally Nikki Bella to win a women’s title match at WrestleMania 34.

Paige stated on April 16, 2019, edition of SmackDown that she will be managing a newly formed women’s tag team comprised of Asuka and the NXT debuting Kairi Sane.
