April Jeanette Mendez is an author and former professional wrestler from the United States.
Her most famous ring moniker was AJ Lee, which she used in WWE. WOW – Women of Wrestling presently employs her as an executive producer.
Mendez began her professional wrestling career in the indie circuit of New Jersey in 2007.
Before being promoted to the main roster, she joined with WWE in 2009 and spent two years in the company’s developmental division, Florida Championship Wrestling.
She came to notoriety in 2012 as a result of stories involving her “mentally disturbed” persona, including high-profile relationships and a three-month tenure as Raw’s General Manager.
In 2012 and 2014, she earned the Slammy Award for Diva of the Year, and from 2012 through 2014, readers of Pro Wrestling Illustrated elected her Woman of the Year. She stopped performing in the ring in 2015.

April Jeanette Mendez was born in Union City, New Jersey, on March 19, 1987.
Janet Acevedo, her mother, was a homemaker who subsequently became a home health aide, and her father, Robert Mendez, was an automotive engineer.
She is the youngest of three children and was born in Puerto Rico.
Mendez stated her family suffered with poverty, mental illness, and drug use during her youth. When they couldn’t pay rent, they would regularly relocate between residences, either in hotels or in their cars.
Her brother’s enthusiasm for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) impacted her decision to pursue a career as a professional wrestler.
She forged her passion at the age of 12 after being inspired by WWE’s female wrestlers, particularly Lita.
She had to work full-time after that in order to fund wrestling instruction.
Around the age of 20, Mendez was diagnosed with bipolar illness, a disease that her mother also had.
She had previously suffered from the side effects of a depression misdiagnosis and had overdosed on antidepressants and opioids.
This occurrence, which she believes was a suicide attempt, prompted her to seek proper therapy and diagnosis.
She attributes her bravery to her condition for allowing her to attain her ambitions.

Education
She graduated from West New York, New Jersey’s Memorial High School in 2005.
She studied in cinema and television production at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts until she dropped out six months into her studies due to familial and financial concerns.
Career
Mendez joined at a wrestling school near her house in March 2007, where she was coached by Jay Lethal.
In May 2009, Mendez spent $1500 to attend a WWE tryout camp, where she signed a contract.
AJ won the Queen of FCW title in February 2010 after defeating Serena Mancini.
On the May 27, 2011, edition of SmackDown, AJ made her main roster debut as part of a tag team with Kaitlyn, dubbed “The Chickbusters.”
She was unintentionally struck by Big Show on January 13, 2012, while accompanying Bryan to his title defence, and was taken out on a stretcher as part of the plot.
When they traded obscenities backstage in March 2013, AJ’s storyline feud with ex-boyfriend Daniel Bryan was revived.
AJ became the longest-reigning Divas Champion at the time in January 2014.
Mendez attacked WWE’s treatment of female wrestlers in February 2015, claiming that women are paid less and have less screen time than their male counterparts despite producing record-breaking merchandise and multiple top-rated programmes.
Mendez returned to the wrestling profession in October 2021 as an executive producer for WOW – Women of Wrestling, alongside Jeanie Buss, after a six-year hiatus.
Beginning in late 2022, Mendez will also give colour commentary on their forthcoming weekly show.

Private & early life
Mendez considers herself to be a tomboy who enjoys comic novels, anime, and video games. On the back of her neck, she has the numerical date of her first WWE Divas Championship victory tattooed in tally marks.
On June 13, 2014, Mendez married fellow professional wrestler Phil Brooks, better known as CM Punk. They live in the city of Chicago, Illinois.
