Christian Bale Biography

Christian Charles Philip Bale was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, on January 30, 1974, to English parents Jenny James, a circus performer, and David Bale, a businessman and campaigner.

Sharon and Louise are his older sisters, while Erin is his half-sister from his father’s first marriage.

One of his grandfathers was a stand-up comedian, while the other was a John Wayne stand-in. Bale and his family moved to Bournemouth from Wales when he was two years old, after residing in Portugal and Oxfordshire, England.

Bale stated that his family had lived in 15 locations by the time he was 15, that the frequent relocation was prompted by “necessity rather than choice,” and that it had a significant impact on his career decision.

Bale’s parents split in 1991, and when he was 17, he relocated to Los Angeles with his sister Louise and their father.

His first acting appearance was in a commercial for the fabric softener Lenor when he was eight years old.

He also appeared in a commercial for Pac-Man cereal.

Bale pondered pursuing acting professionally after his sister got cast in a West End show.

He subsequently said that acting did not appeal to him, but that he pursued it at the insistence of others around him since he had no reason to.

Bale made his West End debut with Rowan Atkinson in the play The Nerd in 1984, after appearing in school productions. He never had any formal acting instruction.
