Snoop Dogg Biography

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. was born in Long Beach, California, on October 20, 1971, parents Vernell Varnado and Beverly Tate.

Vernell was named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. (1948–1985), a Vietnam War soldier, singer, and mail carrier, who left the family only three months after his birth.

His father had largely disappeared from his life.

His parents dubbed him “Snoopy” as a child because of his affection for and resemblance to the Peanuts cartoon character. He was the second of three sons born to his mother.

In 1975, his mother and stepfather divorced. Broadus began singing and playing the piano at the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church when he was very young.

He began rapping in the sixth grade.

Broadus helped his family make ends meet as a child by selling candies, delivering newspapers, and bagging groceries.

He was regarded as a hardworking student and devout churchgoer who participated in chorus and football.

Despite his mother’s efforts to keep him out of trouble, Broadus admitted in 1993 that he began involved in illegal activities and joining gangs when he was a teenager.

Broadus used to rap a lot in school. As he remembered it: “When I rapped in the hallways at school, I drew such a large crowd that the principal mistook it for a brawl. It made me understand that I has a talent. I could tell that my raps piqued people’s interest, which piqued my own.”

Broadus was constantly in trouble with the law as a teenager. He was a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang in Long Beach’s Eastside neighbourhood, yet he claimed in 1993 that he had never joined a gang, despite regular police and media allegations to the contrary.

Snoop created homemade tapes with his two cousins, Nate Dogg and Lil’ 12 Dead, and friend Warren G; the four called their group 213 after the area code of their hometown of Long Beach at the time.

Snoop’s early solo freestyles over En Vogue’s “Hold On” appeared on a mixtape that ended up in the hands of Dr. Dre, who was so taken with the sample that he invited Snoop to audition.

The D.O.C., a former N.W.A affiliate, showed him how to structure his songs and divide them into verses, hooks, and choruses.

Snoop Dogg was charged with first-degree murder in 1993 for killing Philip Woldermariam, a rival gang member who was slain by Snoop’s bodyguard, McKinley Lee, aka Malik.

After his acquittal, he, the mother of his son, and their kennel of 20 pit bulls moved into a 5,000-square-foot (460 m2) home in the hills of Claremont, California and by August 1996 Doggy Style Records, a subsidiary of Death Row Records, signed the Gap Band Charlie Wilson as one of its first artists.

Ice Cube’s 2006 album Laugh Now, Cry Later included Snoop Dogg on two tracks, including “Go to Church,” while Tha Dogg Pound’s Cali Iz Active featured Snoop Dogg on multiple tracks.

Snoop Dogg made history in July 2007 when he released “It’s the D.O.G.” as a ringtone before it was released as a song, making him the first artist to do so.

Snoop Dogg has been promoted to Vice President of Priority Records. Malice n Wonderland, his tenth studio album, was released on December 8, 2009.

Private & early life

On June 12, 1997, Snoop married Shante Taylor, his high school lover. He filed for divorce from Taylor on May 21, 2004, alleging irreconcilable differences.

On January 12, 2008, the pair remarried. Cordé and Cordell, who left football to pursue a career as a filmmaker, and daughter Cori are their three children. Julian Corrie Broadus is Snoop’s kid from a relationship with Laurie Holmond.

R&B artists Brandy and Ray J, as well as WWE professional wrestler Sasha Banks, are his first cousins. Snoop’s eldest son, Cordé Broadus, had a son with his girlfriend, Jessica Kyzer, in 2015, and he became a grandfather.

Kai, Cordé’s second son, died ten days after his birth on September 25, 2019.

Snoop Dogg has been an outspoken cannabis user since the beginning of his career, and it has been one of his image’s trademarks.

In 2002, he declared that he would give up cannabis for good; however, this did not last long (as depicted in the 2004 Adam Sandler film 50 First Dates), and by 2013, he claimed to be smoking around 80 cannabis blunts each day.

Since at least 2007, he has been certified for medical cannabis in California to treat migraines.

Unlike other hip hop artists who had superficially acquired the pimp persona, Snoop stated in a 2006 interview with Rolling Stone magazine that he was a true professional pimp in 2003 and 2004, saying,

“That nonsense was my natural calling, and once I got into it, it became enjoyable. For me, it was like shooting layups. Every time, I was making ’em.”

Beverly Tate, Snoop’s mother, died on October 24, 2021.
