Obama graduated from Columbia University (BA) and Harvard University (JD).
Career
Obama moved from New York to Chicago two years after graduating from Columbia University, where he was hired as the director of the Developing Communities Project.
In 1996, Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate, succeeding Democratic State Senator Alice Palmer from the 13th District.
President Bush signed the Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act into law in December 2006, making it the first federal legislation with Obama as the principal sponsor.
Obama filed election paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on April 4, 2011, and subsequently started his 2012 reelection campaign in a video titled “It Begins with Us” on his website.
