Mary Kom was born on November 24, 1982, in the hamlet of Kangathei in the Moirang Lamkhai district of rural Manipur, India.

She was born into a poor Kom family.

Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom, her parents, were tenant farmers who toiled in the jhum fields.

Kom attended the Loktak Christian Model High School in Moirang until she was in sixth grade, then transferred to St. Xavier Catholic School in Moirang until she was in eighth grade.

Kom is married to Karung Onkholer, a footballer (Onler).

After her suitcase was taken while traveling by rail to Bangalore in 2000, Kom saw her spouse for the first time.

On her way to the National Games in Punjab, she met Onkholer, a law student at Delhi University, in New Delhi.
