Education
At the age of nine, he made his acting debut in a school play as the lead.
After that, he went to Broad Street High School in Greenwood, Mississippi, which is now Threadgill Elementary School.
He won a statewide drama competition when he was 12 years old, and while settling into school, he found music and theatre.
Freeman graduated from high school in 1955, but instead of accepting a partial theatre scholarship from Jackson State University, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he worked as an Automatic Tracking Radar Repairman.
He relocated to Los Angeles, California, after serving from 1955 to 1959, and took acting training at the Pasadena Playhouse.
He also went to Los Angeles City College to study theatrical arts, where an instructor urged him to pursue a career in dance.

Freeman was a dancer at the 1964 World’s Fair and a member of San Francisco’s Opera Ring musical theatre ensemble.

Freeman played Frederick Douglass in The Civil War, a television miniseries about the American Civil War, which aired in 1990.

From October 22, 1967, through November 18, 1979, Freeman was married to Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, and then to Myrna Colley-Lee on June 16, 1984.
