David Letterman was born on April 12, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to two sisters, one elder, and the other younger.
Harry Joseph Letterman, his father, worked as a florist.
Dorothy Marie Letterman Mengering, his mother and church secretary for the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis, appeared on Letterman’s program on occasion, notably around holidays and birthdays.
Letterman grew up in the Broad Ripple neighborhood of Indianapolis.

When David was a little kid, Harry Joseph Letterman survived a heart attack at the age of 36. Letterman’s dread of losing his father remained persistent as he grew up. At the age of 57, the older Letterman died following a second heart attack in 1973.

Education
Letterman went to Broad Ripple High School and worked as a stock boy at the Atlas Supermarket in his hometown.
He planned to attend Indiana University, but his grades were not strong enough, so he went to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, according to the Ball State Daily News.
He is a Sigma Chi fraternity member who graduated from what was then the Department of Radio and Television in 1969.
Letterman, a self-described average student, later created a fund at Ball State for “C students.”
Despite having registered for the draught and passing his medical after graduation, he was not selected for duty in Vietnam due to a draught lottery number of 346.
Career
In 1991, Letterman founded Worldwide Pants Incorporated, which produced his program as well as numerous others.
Clear Entertainment, the company’s own record label, also produces feature films and documentaries.

Private & early life
Letterman has tinnitus, which is a sign of hearing loss.
He no longer consumes alcoholic beverages. He said on several occasions that he was a “terrible alcoholic” who began drinking at the age of 13 and continued until he was 34 years old in 1981.
He is a Presbyterian, a Christian tradition in which his mother raised him, yet he has previously stated that he is motivated by “Lutheran, Midwestern guilt.”
He married Michelle Cook, his undergraduate sweetheart, on July 2, 1968, in Muncie, Indiana; they divorced in October 1977.
From 1978 through 1988, he had a long-term relationship with Merrill Markoe, the former head writer and producer of Late Night.
Letterman began dating Regina Lasko in February 1986, while still living with Markoe.
On November 3, 2003, Lasko gave birth to their son, Harry Joseph Letterman.
Letterman and Lasko married in a private courtroom civil ceremony on March 19, 2009, in Choteau, Montana.
