Nicolas Cage Biography

Nicolas Cage was born on January 7, 1964, in Long Beach, California, U.S.

August Coppola, a literature professor, and Joy Vogelsang, a dancer, and choreographer raised Cage in Long Beach, California.

He grew up in a Catholic household.

His father had Italian heritage, while his mother had German and Polish backgrounds.

His paternal great-grandparents were immigrants from Bernalda, Basilicata, and his paternal grandparents were composer Carmine Coppola and actress Italia Pennino.

He is a nephew of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire, as well as a cousin of directors Roman and Sofia Coppola, film producer Gian-Carlo Coppola, and actors Robert and Jason Schwartzman, via his father.

Marc “The Cope” Coppola, a New York radio personality, and Christopher Coppola, a director, are Cage’s two brothers.

He stated that he began acting because he was bored “James Dean was someone I aspired to be. I watched him in East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. Nothing in Eden struck me the way Dean did in Eden—no rock tune, no classical music. It really blew my head. ‘That’s what I want to do,’ I said.”

He tried to persuade his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, to grant him a film test when he was fifteen years old, promising him, “I’ll show you acting.” “Silence in the vehicle” was the reaction to his outburst.

Coppola had previously directed Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, and Robert De Niro by this point of his career.

Although he starred in several of his uncle’s films early in his career, he changed his name to Nicholas Cage to avoid appearing as Coppola’s nephew and was inspired, in part, by Marvel Comics protagonist Luke Cage and composer John Cage.

Education

He went to Beverly Hills High School, which has a long history of producing performers.

He wanted to be an actor since he was a child and attended UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television.

In a school performance of Golden Boy, he had his first non-cinematic acting experience.

Career

Cage has acted in a broad range of films, both popular and unusual, since his cinematic debut in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High, with Judge Reinhold and Sean Penn, and an early leading part in 1983’s Valley Girl, directed by Martha Coolidge.

For the character of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin in the 2001 film, he learned to play the mandolin from the ground up.

Despite worldwide releases and positive reviews for his performances, two films in which he starred, Lord of War and The Weather Man, failed to attract a substantial audience in 2005.

The Wicker Man remake from 2006 received dismal reviews and failed to recoup its $40 million budget.

The critically panned Ghost Rider (2007), based on the Marvel Comics character, performed better, grossing more than $45 million (the highest opening weekend gross) and more than $208 million worldwide until March 25, 2007.

In the 2008 film Bangkok Dangerous, Cage played Joe, a contract killer who had a change of heart while on a job assignment in Bangkok.

Cage also acted in Werner Herzog’s famed German film Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which was released in 2009.

Cage returned to the character of Ghost Rider in the 2012 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

In 2013, he also acted in Joe, a David Gordon Green-directed and co-produced indie criminal thriller film based on Larry Brown’s 1991 novel of the same name.

Dog Eat Dog, Cage’s second film with Paul Schrader after Wild at Heart, paired him with Willem Dafoe as a couple of ex-convicts paid to abduct a baby.

Cage appeared in the action thriller Mandy, which opened at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival on January 19th.

Cage signed on to play the main part in Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space, based on the short tale “The Colour Out of Space” by H. P. Lovecraft, in December 2018.

In November 2019, Cage starred with Pedro Pascal and Tiffany Haddish in the comedy-drama The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which he played a fictionalized version of himself. The film is set to be released in theatres on April 22, 2022.

Cage will portray Joe Exotic in a scripted eight-episode Tiger King series written and executive produced by Dan Lagana, which will premiere in May 2020. In July 2021, it was revealed that the project will be canceled.

Cage was cast in the Universal Classic Monsters spin-off film Renfield in November 2021. As Dracula, Cage will play a supporting role to Nicholas Hoult’s titular R.M. Renfield.

Directing and producing

Sonny, a low-budget thriller featuring James Franco as a male prostitute whose mother serves as his pimp, was Cage’s directorial debut in 2002. Cage played a minor role in the picture, which earned mixed reviews and only a limited release in theatres. Cage’s producing credits include Saturn Films’ debut film, Shadow of the Vampire.

Cage revealed during the Bahamas International Film Festival in early December 2006 that he would be discontinuing his acting career in order to pursue other hobbies. Cage serves as executive producer for the Sci-Fi Channel’s The Dresden Files.

Private & early life

Cage began dating actress Christina Fulton in 1988, and they had a son, Weston Coppola Cage, together. Weston was a member of two black metal bands and played a helicopter mechanic in his father’s film Lord of War. Cage has two grandkids through Weston, who were born in 2014 and 2016.

Cage has married five times throughout his life. Patricia Arquette, his first wife, was an actress (married in April 1995, divorce finalized in 2001).

Cage married Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis Presley, in his second marriage. Cage is an Elvis Presley devotee and based his performance in Wild at Heart on the singer. Presley and Cage married on August 10, 2002, and 107 days later, on November 25, 2002, they filed for divorce.

On May 16, 2004, the divorce was completed.

Alice Kim is Cage’s third wife. On July 30, 2004, they married on a secluded ranch in northern California. On October 3, 2005, she gave birth to their son, Kal-El (named after Superman’s birth name). In January 2016, the couple divorced.

Cage married Erika Koike in Las Vegas in March 2019, only to have the marriage annulled four days later. Cage was granted a divorce from Koike in June of this year.

Cage married for the fifth time on February 16, 2021, to his fiancée Riko Shibata, with whom he is expecting his third kid.

Real estate and tax problems

Nicolas Cage was previously one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, earning $40 million in 2009, according to Forbes, but failing to reach the Top 10 List in 2014.

Cage bought “Grey Craig,” a 24,000-square-foot (2,200-square-meter) brick-and-stone country estate in Middletown, Rhode Island, in August 2007.

The Internal Revenue Service filed filings in New Orleans on July 14, 2009, in connection with a federal tax lien against Cage’s Louisiana property for unpaid federal taxes.

Cage’s “buying binge comprised the acquisition of three more properties at a total cost of more than $33 million; the purchase of 22 vehicles (including 9 Rolls Royces); 12 purchases of fine jewelry; and 47 purchases of artwork and exotic objects,” according to Levin’s petition.

According to Cage, he possessed the “Most Haunted House in America,” which is located in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

The house was finally sold for $10.5 million in November 2010. Another property in Nevada is also up for auction. Cage also sold his Action Comics #1 for a record-breaking $2.16 million (the previous record was $1.5 million) at an online auction organized by Heritage Auctions in November 2011 to help pay off his tax liens and other debts.
