Cook spent 12 years at IBM’s personal computer division after graduating from Auburn University, eventually rising to the position of director of North American fulfillment. Cook completed his MBA at Duke University during this period and was named a Fuqua Scholar in 1988.
He then worked for Intelligent Electronics as the chief operating officer of its computer reseller segment. He worked at Compaq for six months as vice president of corporate materials in 1997 but quit when Steve Jobs recruited him.
Apple era
Steve Jobs invited Cook to join Apple in 1998. Cook says he chose to join Apple after meeting Jobs at a graduating address at Auburn University.
His first job was as a senior vice president in charge of global operations. Cook shut down facilities and warehouses, replacing them with contract manufacturers, reducing the company’s inventory from months to days.
While Jobs was abroad on a leave of absence for health reasons, Cook was appointed to manage operations in January 2007 and served as chief executive in 2009. Jobs sought a third medical leave of absence, which Apple’s board of directors authorized in January 2011.
Cook was in charge of the majority of Apple’s day-to-day operations at the time, while Jobs was in charge of the majority of the company’s important decisions.
Apple chief executive
Cook was designated Apple Inc.’s new chief executive officer on August 24, 2011, after Jobs stepped down as CEO and became chairman of the board.
Cook changed the company’s leadership staff dramatically on October 29, 2012. After resigning as senior vice president of iOS, Scott Forstall remained an advisor to Cook until leaving the firm in 2013.
When Apple’s senior vice president of retail, John Browett, was fired six months after starting at the company, he was given 100,000 shares worth $60 million.
After the third quarter of the fiscal year, when revenues and earnings fell short of expectations, Cook made the executive changes. After the Chinese government closed Apple’s online iTunes Store and Apple Books store, Cook flew to China in May 2016 to speak with government officials.
In 2016, numerous commentators linked Cook to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, stating that innovation has slowed after he succeeded Jobs, much as it did when Ballmer took over the company in 2000. Cook spoke at the World Internet Conference in Beijing in December 2017.
In October 2019, Cook was appointed to a three-year term as chairman of the Tsinghua University economics school advisory board. Cook reached an agreement with Chinese officials worth $275 billion in 2016. After 10 years on the job, Cook earned compensation of almost $750 million in August 2021, after selling over five million shares in Apple.

Cook likes hiking, cycling, and going to the gym as a form of exercise. He’s renowned for being reclusive, preferring to work out at an off-campus gym for seclusion, and his personal life is kept private. In October 2014, he said that he was aiming for a “basic degree of privacy.”
Cook said that he gave Jobs a piece of his liver in 2009 since they had a rare blood type. Jobs reacted by saying, according to Cook “That’s something I’m not going to allow you to do.
That is not something I will ever do.” Cook addressed the value of intuition throughout major decision-making processes in his commencement speech at Auburn in 2010 and explained that intuition requires both preparation and hard effort to implement.
Cook and a group of Apple employees joined the LGBT pride parade in San Francisco in June 2014. “I’m glad to be gay, and I believe being gay to be among the greatest things God has given me,” Cook said in an editorial for Bloomberg Business on October 30.
In October 2019, he discussed the choice, saying that it was owing LGBTQ individuals who had battled for their rights before him that opened the road for his success, and that he needed to let younger generations know that he considered being homosexual a feature rather than a problem in his life.
Cook became the Fortune 500’s first and only out homosexual CEO. In 2021, he was included in Time’s annual list of the world’s 100 most powerful people, the Time 100.
