On January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, then in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy was born to Jewish parents.

His father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy is a professor and computer scientist at the Kryvyi Rih State University of Economics and Technology, where he is also the chairman of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware, and his mother, Rymma Zelenska, worked as an engineer.

Members of Zelenskyy’s production firm, Kvartal 95, formed a new political party called Servant of the People in March 2018, naming it after the three-year-old television show in which he had appeared.

He was already a frontrunner in opinion surveys in October 2018, three months before announcing his candidacy and six months before the election.

Zelenskyy ran a nearly exclusively virtual presidential campaign against Poroshenko. Twenty Ukrainian news sites demanded that Zelenskyy “stop avoiding journalists” on April 16, 2019, only days before the election.
