On January 25, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, then in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy was born to Jewish parents.

His father, Oleksandr Zelenskyy is a professor and computer scientist at the Kryvyi Rih State University of Economics and Technology, where he is also the chairman of the Department of Cybernetics and Computing Hardware, and his mother, Rymma Zelenska, worked as an engineer.

Semyon Ivanovych Zelenskyy, his grandpa, served in the Red Army as an infantryman and rose through the ranks to Colonel.

Zelenskyy spent four years before attending primary school in the Mongolian city of Erdenet, where his father worked. Zelenskyy was born and raised in Russia.

He obtained an education scholarship to study in Israel after passing the Test of English as a Foreign Language, but his father would not let him go.

Political Career

Members of Zelenskyy’s production firm, Kvartal 95, formed a new political party called Servant of the People in March 2018, naming it after the three-year-old television show in which he had appeared.

He was already a frontrunner in opinion surveys in October 2018, three months before announcing his candidacy and six months before the election.

Zelenskyy ran a nearly exclusively virtual presidential campaign against Poroshenko. Twenty Ukrainian news sites demanded that Zelenskyy “stop avoiding journalists” on April 16, 2019, only days before the election.

The presidential debates were staged as a spectacle on April 19, 2019, at the Olimpiyskiy National Sports Complex.

Although Zelenskyy first stated that he would serve only one term, he then changed his mind in May 2021, claiming that he had not made up his mind. Zelenskyy declared that as president, he would “restart the legal system” and restore faith in the state in order to strengthen the economy and attract investment to Ukraine.

In June 2021, Zelenskyy introduced a measure in the Verkhovna Rada that would create a public register of Ukraine’s oligarchs, prohibiting them from participating in state-owned company privatizations and prohibiting them from financially supporting politicians.

Zelenskyy married Olena Kiyashko, with whom he had gone to school, in September 2003.
