Domestic career
Kumar is a domestic cricketer representing Uttar Pradesh; he has also represented Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy and made his first-class debut against Bengal at the age of 17. He became the first bowler in first-class cricket to dismiss Sachin Tendulkar for a duck in the 2008/09 Ranji Trophy final.
Indian Premier League
Royal Challengers Bangalore signed him to an Indian Premier League (IPL) contract after his performances in the 2008/09 Ranji season. He was signed by Pune Warriors India in 2011, however after the team was disbanded[when?] in 2014, he signed with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In 2016, he was a member of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side that won the Indian Premier League, taking 23 wickets and claiming the Purple Cap as the season’s leading wicket-taker. He was selected vice-captain of the team in 2018.
Bhuvi was purchased by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for 4.20 crores in the 2022 Indian Premier League mega-auction.
International career
Kumar made his international debut against Pakistan in T20I and ODI matches towards the end of 2012. In 2013, he made his Test debut and was a member of India’s Champions Trophy-winning team. The International Cricket Council named him to the Team of the Tournament (ICC).
In the Tri-Nation competition in July 2013, he had a career-best four wickets for eight runs (4/8) against Sri Lanka. He was named Player of the Series after taking the most wickets in the competition.
Kumar set new career-best Test match bowling numbers of 6/82 at Lord’s during the 2014 tour of England and was voted Indian Player of the Series.
In a T20I against South Africa in February 2018, he took a five-wicket haul. In T20Is, he became the second Indian bowler to take five wickets. Kumar took his 100th ODI wicket in the first ODI against Australia in January 2019.
He was picked in India’s squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019, although he was forced to withdraw from a number of matches owing to a leg injury.
Kumar was chosen as India’s vice-captain for the ODI and T20I matches against Sri Lanka in June 2021, and he was named in India’s team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in September 2021.
