Bumrah was born on December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, into a Sikh Punjabi family.
Jasbir Singh, Bumrah’s father, died when he was five years old.
He was raised in a middle-class environment by his mother, Daljit Bumrah, a school teacher in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Career
Domestic cricket
Bumrah debuted for Gujarat in first-class cricket against Vidarbha in October 2013 during the 2013–14 season.
Bumrah, a right-arm fast-medium bowler from Gujarat with an unorthodox bowling motion, made his T20 debut against Maharashtra in the 2012–13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and with his Man of the Match performance, also helped his side win the tournament. Gujarat’s victory over Punjab in the final was aided by his 3/14 statistics.
Bumrah, who is 19 years old, sprang to prominence after he bowled 3/32 in his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite playing only a few games for Mumbai Indians in the Pepsi IPL 2013, the team’s management decided to keep him for the Pepsi IPL 2014 season.
During the India tour of Australia in December 2020, he hit his first first-class half-century (55*) against Australia A.
International career
In two T20I series against the West Indies in August 2016, he became the bowler with the most Twenty20 International wickets (28) in a calendar year, beating Dirk Nannes’ record.
Bumrah was named Player of the Encounter for his performance in the second T20I match of England’s 2016–17 India tour, in which he took two wickets and conceded 20 runs.
He was picked in India’s Test team for the series against South Africa in November 2017.
In the 3rd Test Match of the India Tour of England 2018, at Trent Bridge, Bumrah grabbed his second five-wicket haul in Tests, with statistics of 5/85 from 29 overs, as India defeated England by 203 runs.
With career-best statistics of 6/33 on Boxing Day of the India Tour of Australia 2018, Bumrah became the first Asian bowler to collect five-wicket hauls in Australia, England, and South Africa in the same calendar year.
He was picked to India’s team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019.
Bumrah recorded his fourth Test five-wicket haul against West Indies in August 2019, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, in the first Test match of India’s West Indies tour, with figures of 5/7 in the second innings.
Bumrah became the Indian bowler with the poorest economy rate while defending a target with at least 100 balls bowled in the second innings of the second test of the 2021 India-South Africa test series in January 2022, which also happened to be his first test as a team India’s vice-captain.
