KL Rahul, the son of KN Lokesh and Rajeshwari, was born in Bangalore on April 18, 1992.
Lokesh, a professor and former director of Mangalore’s National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), was born in Kananur, Magadi taluk. Rajeshwari, his mother, is a Mangalore university professor.
Lokesh planned to name his baby after batsman Sunil Gavaskar, however, he misread Rohan Gavaskar’s name for Rahul.

Education
Rahul grew up in Mangalore, where he attended NITK English Medium School for high school and St. Aloysius College for pre-university.
He began cricket training at the age of ten and began playing matches for both Bangalore United Cricket Club and his Mangalore club two years later.
He traveled to Bangalore at the age of 18 to study at Jain University and continue his cricket career.
Career
Domestic career
In the 2010–11 season, Rahul made his first-class cricket debut for Karnataka. In the same season, he competed in the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup for his country, making a total of 143 runs.
In 2013, he made his Indian Premier League debut for Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was the second-highest scorer in the domestic season of 2013–14, with 1,033 first-class runs.
Rahul hit 185 off 233 balls in the first innings and 130 off 152 balls in the second innings for South Zone in the 2014–15 Duleep Trophy final versus Central Zone. He was selected player of the match, and he was named to the Indian Test team for the next Australian trip.
Rahul became Karnataka’s first triple-centurion when he returned home after the Test series, batting 337 against Uttar Pradesh. In the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu, he scored 188 runs and ended the season with a 93.11 average in nine matches.
International career
In the 2014 Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Rahul made his Test debut. MS Dhoni handed him his Test cap when he replaced Rohit Sharma.
He was a member of the 15-man Indian team that toured Bangladesh in June 2015, however, he had to withdraw owing to Dengue sickness.
T20I and ODI debuts
Rahul was picked in the team for the 2016 tour of Zimbabwe, and he made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club, scoring an undefeated 100*(115).
Suspension and controversy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) banned Hardik Pandya and K. L. Rahul on January 11, 2019, following contentious statements they made earlier in the month on the Indian TV program Koffee with Karan. They were both sent home before India’s ODI series against Australia and the tour’s New Zealand matches. The BCCI declared on January 24, 2019, that Rahul would re-join India A squad after the suspensions for Pandya and Rahul were lifted.
Vice captaincy promotion
Following Virat Kohli’s resignation as Indian T20i captain, KL was named Vice-Captain of the Indian Cricket Team in T20i, with former Vice-Captain Rohit Sharma being named the new T20i Captain.
Due to a change in captaincy in the white-ball format of the Indian squad, KL was also named vice-captain in ODIs.
After India’s normal vice-captain Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the series, Rahul was chosen as India’s Test vice-captain for the away series against South Africa in December 2021.
Captaining India for first time
Rahul captained India for the first time in test cricket in the second test against South Africa in January 2022, becoming the 34th test captain of India.
Feb 2022, to the present
KL made 49 runs in the second ODI of India’s series against the Windies in February 2022, giving him a total of 6000 runs in international cricket across all forms. KL suffered an upper left hamstring injury in the same ODI and has been ruled out of the next ODI as well as the next T20I series against the Windies.
