Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane is a former captain of the Indian national cricket team in all forms and an international cricketer from India.

In Test cricket, he is generally a middle-order batsman, but in white-ball cricket, he is a top-order batsman.

He was also the India national cricket team’s vice-captain in Tests until the home series against New Zealand in 2021 when he was replaced.

In domestic cricket, he plays for Mumbai Indians, while in the IPL, he plays for Kolkata Knight Riders.

Rahane made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the 2007–08 Ranji Trophy season.

Rahane was born in a Hindu Maratha family on June 6, 1988 in Ashwi KD, Sangamner Taluka, Ahmednagar district to Madhukar Baburao Rahane and Sujata Rahane.

Shashank and Apurva Rahane, his younger brother and sister, are his siblings.

Madhukar Rahane took Rahane to a modest coaching camp on a matting wicket in Dombivli when he was seven years old since they couldn’t afford formal coaching.

He began receiving instruction from former India batsman Pravin Amre when he was 17 years old.

Rahane graduated from SV Joshi High School in Dombivli with a Secondary School Certificate.

Career

Rahane had scored two-century during India’s U-19 tour of New Zealand in early 2007. In Pakistan, he was chosen for the Mohammad Nissar Trophy.

First-rate career

At the age of 19, Rahane made his first-class debut for Mumbai against Karachi Urban in the Mohammad Nissar Trophy in Karachi in September 2007, when most of Mumbai’s first-choice players were unavailable for different reasons.

In the 2007–08 Duleep Trophy, Rahane scored 172 against England Lions for West Zone.

With 1089 runs in his second Ranji season (2008–09), Rahane was instrumental in Mumbai’s 38th title victory.

Rahane joined Hampshire as a foreign player for two months in April of this year.

List A career

Rahane completed his To-Do List. In March 2007, Mumbai made their Vijay Hazare Trophy debut against Delhi.

Rahane rose through the Mumbai levels and was a member of the Indian U-19 and India A teams. He also played in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy for India Blue and India Green.

Rahane was selected Mumbai’s captain for the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy competition in September 2018.

International career

In November 2011, Rahane was named to the Test team to face the West Indies. Rahane was in the squad for 16 months and saw seven players make their debuts while he was there.

Rahane made his Test debut on March 22, 2013, at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi, against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

On February 15, 2014, Rahane scored his first Test century against New Zealand at Basin Reserve in Wellington, New Zealand.

Rahane was a participant in the 2015 Freedom Series.

On August 16, 2016, Rahane was ranked No. 8 in the world for test batsmen for the first time in his career.

Due to an injury to Virat Kohli, Rahane became India’s 33rd Test captain when he led the side in the fourth test against Australia at Dharamsala on March 25, 2017.

Rahane struck 86 from 172 deliveries in the first innings of the first test match against Bangladesh on November 15, 2019, clearing the boundaries nine times.

He was named captain of the Indian team for the remaining three matches of India’s tour of Australia in December 2020, replacing Virat Kohli, who was on paternity leave.

Due to Kohli’s absence, Rahane was named captain of the Indian squad for the first Test against New Zealand in November 2021.

Rahane has led six Tests, four of which he has won and two of which he has drawn.

IPL career

Rajasthan Royals purchased Rahane for the 2012 Indian Premier League season. He previously played for the Mumbai Indians but only saw minimal action.

Rahane became the first batter to achieve a century and the leading run-scorer for Rajasthan Royals in the 2012 IPL. The Royals have decided to keep him for the 2014 Premier League season.

When Rajasthan Royals were banned from the IPL for two years in 2016, and 2017, Rahane played for Rising Pune Supergiant.

Rajasthan Royals used a Right-to-Match card to get Rahane back for Rs 4 crore in 2018. On February 24, 2018, Steve Smith was named captain of the Rajasthan Royals.

Rahane was traded from Rajasthan Royals to Delhi Capitals in November 2019 in preparation for the 2020 Indian Premier League.

He was re-signed by the organization for the IPL 2021 season. After some poor innings in the 2020 season, Rahane was rarely included in any match for the 2021 season.

In the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League, he was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders in February 2022.
