Shikhar Dhawan was born on December 5, 1985, in Delhi, India, to Punjabi parents Sunaina and Mahendra Pal Dhawan.

He finished his education at Meera Bagh’s St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School.

He has been training at Sonnet Club since he was 12 years old, under the direction of coach Tarak Sinha, who has taught 12 international cricketers.

When Dhawan originally joined the club, he was a wicketkeeper.

Career

Early career

Dhawan made his debut for Delhi Under-16s in the 1999/00 Vijay Merchant Trophy and was the tournament’s highest run-scorer in the 2000/01 Vijay Merchant Trophy, in which Delhi finished second.

Dhawan’s outstanding efforts for the Delhi Under-16s earned him a spot in the India Under-17 team for the ACC Under-17 Asia Cup in 2000/01.

Dhawan was re-selected in the Delhi Under-19 team for the Cooch Behar Trophy in October 2002, when he scored 388 runs in eight innings at an average of 55.42, including two hundred.

Domestic career

In November 2004, Dhawan made his first-class debut for Delhi against Andhra in the Ranji Trophy season 2004–05, hitting 49 in his first innings.

Dhawan played for India B in 2005/06 Challenger Trophy in October 2005 and had a dismal series with the bat.

Dhawan began the 2006-07 Ranji season with a century while batting at number three against Tamil Nadu.

Dhawan rediscovered his form in the 2008–09 Ranji season, scoring 415 runs at an average of over 69, but he struggled in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, averaging 18.80 in six innings.

In October 2009, Dhawan represented India Red in the Challenger Trophy.

International career

In October 2010, India’s selectors named a “second string” squad for a three-match ODI series against Australia, and Dhawan was included in the 14-man squad, marking his maiden appearance in an Indian senior team squad.

In June 2011, India traveled to the West Indies for three Tests, five One-Day Internationals, and one Twenty20 International.

Recall to Indian team

Dhawan was recalled to the India ODI team for the Champions Trophy commencing in June 2017 after his strong domestic performances. On the opening day of the competition, he made his comeback against Pakistan, hitting 68 off 65 balls to assist his team win the game.

Indian Premier League

Prior to the start of the 2013 Champions League Twenty20 tournament, Dhawan was named captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad side.

In the 2014 Indian Premier League, Darren Sammy took over as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Sunrisers Hyderabad has retained Dhawan for the 2017 Indian Premier League season.
