Bettany was born in London on May 27, 1971, to Anne Bettany, a stage vocalist, theatre instructor, and stage manager, and Thane Bettany, a dancer, actor, drama teacher, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex’s godfather.
Bettany was reared as a Roman Catholic, but following his confirmation, his church attendance dwindled.

Bettany began a three-year training at the Drama Centre London in Chalk Farm in 1990, when she was 19 years old.

Bettany married Jennifer Connelly, an American actress, in Scotland on January 1, 2003.
They met while starring in the 2001 film A Beautiful Mind. They didn’t start dating until after the filming because they were both in other relationships at the time.
He had a crush on her as a teenager after watching her in the 1986 picture Labyrinth. Despite the fact that they were not in a relationship, the September 11 attacks inspired him to act on his emotions for her, and after two days of attempting to reach her, he proposed. After living together in Tribeca, they relocated to Brooklyn Heights shortly after their marriage.
The couple has two children: a son, who was born in 2003, and a daughter, who was born in 2011. Connelly’s son from a previous relationship is raised by Bettany.
