Wong was born in Eccles, Greater Manchester, on July 3, 1971, to Hong Kong immigrant parents who had traveled through Ireland before arriving in England.

Wong’s debut part was in Kevin Wong’s 1993 BBC Radio production, Kai Mei Sauce. In the situation comedy 15 Storeys High, he played Errol Spears with Sean Lock, and in the second season of Look Around You, he played Franklin Fu.
