Private & early life

Around the end of the 1980s, Murphy had two boys in rapid succession: Eric with then-girlfriend Paulette McNeely and Christian with then-girlfriend Tamara Hood.

Murphy met Nicole Mitchell in 1988 at an NAACP Image Awards presentation and began a long-term relationship with her. They lived together for over two years before marrying on March 18, 1993, in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Bria, Myles, Shayne, Zola, and Bella are Murphy and Mitchell’s five children. Mitchell filed for divorce in August 2005, alleging “irreconcilable disagreements.” On April 17, 2006, the divorce was completed.

Murphy began seeing former Spice Girl Melanie Brown after his divorce from Mitchell in 2006, and she fell pregnant and claimed the kid as Murphy’s. Brown gave birth to daughter Angel Iris Murphy Brown on April 3, 2007, Murphy’s 46th birthday. Brown’s attorneys stated on June 22, 2007, that a DNA test had proven Murphy was the father. Murphy has not pursued a connection with Angel, according to Brown in an interview, yet it was subsequently claimed in 2010 that Murphy was getting to know her.

On January 1, 2008, Murphy married Tracey Edmonds, the former wife of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, in a secret wedding on an island off the coast of Bora Bora. “After much study and debate, we have mutually decided that we would forego having a formal ceremony as it is not essential to define our relationship further,” the pair said in a statement on January 16, 2008, adding that they would “remain friends.” Later that year, Murphy purchased property on Long Island, New York.

Murphy and Australian model Paige Butcher, whom he has been seeing since 2012, welcomed a baby in May 2016. Murphy and Butcher welcomed their first child in November 2018. They planned to marry in September of 2018. Murphy’s late brother, Charlie, died of leukemia in 2017, and their son’s middle name honors him.
