Private & early life

Norton has chosen not to discuss his personal life in public, claiming that excessive media attention may distract him from his work as an actor.

Tabloids reported that Norton and his onscreen co-star Courtney Love were dating after the release of The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996).

Norton stated that he and Love were merely friends and coworkers and that they were not romantically linked.

Love, however, revealed on an episode of Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show that they had been together for “four years.”

This was in addition to her comments about their previous relationship in a 2006 interview.

She described Norton as a “power of good” who served as a “mediator” and “communicator” between her and her daughter Frances Bean Cobain.

After breaking up with Love in 1999, Norton began dating Salma Hayek, with whom he eventually co-starred in the 2002 movie Frida.

Norton skipped the premiere of The Italian Job, in which he acted, to attend the premiere of Hayek’s directorial debut, The Maldonado Miracle.

They split up in 2003. Norton and Hayek are still friends.

After six years of dating, Norton proposed to Canadian film producer Shauna Robertson in 2011. They married in 2012 and had their first child, Atlas, the following year.
