Donal Gibson, one of Gibson’s younger brothers, is also an actor.

Gibson claims that his first name comes from St Mel’s Cathedral, the fifth-century Irish saint who founded Gibson’s mother’s native diocese, Ardagh.

Gibson’s middle name, Colmcille, is both the name of an Irish saint and the village in County Longford where Gibson’s mother was born and reared.

On February 14, 1968, Gibson’s father was granted US$145,000 in a work-related-injury case against the New York Central Railroad, and his family moved to West Pymble, Sydney, Australia.

At the time, Gibson was 12 years old.

Gibson was educated at St Leo’s Catholic College in Wahroonga, New South Wales, by members of the Congregation of Christian Brothers throughout his high school years.

When Gibson initially entered the film industry, he received glowing reviews from reviewers and was compared to a number of legendary movie actors.

Later in his career, Gibson took on a range of parts, including human tragedies like the Franco Zeffirelli film adaptation of Hamlet (1990) and humorous roles like those in Maverick (1994) and What Women Want (2000).

Gibson immediately began filming Mad Max after graduating in 1977, although he continued to work as a theatrical actor and joined the State Theatre Company of South Australia in Adelaide.
