He gained his first critical praise as an actor for his co-starring part as Stanley Rosiello in The Lords of Flatbush, after laboring as a struggling actor for a number of years after coming to New York City in 1969 and then Hollywood in 1974.
Starting in 1976 with his role as boxer Rocky Balboa in the first film of the successful Rocky series (1976–present), for which he also wrote the screenplays, Stallone gradually found work as an extra or side character in films with a large budget until he achieved his greatest critical and commercial success as an actor and screenwriter.

On July 6, 1946, Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone, the eldest son of Francesco “Frank” Stallone Sr., a hairdresser and beautician, and Jacqueline “Jackie” Stallone, an astrologer, dancer, and promoter of women’s wrestling, was born in the Hell’s Kitchen area of Manhattan, New York City.
His Italian father was born in Gioia del Colle, Italy, and immigrated to the United States in the 1930s, while his American mother is French (from Brittany) and Ashkenazi Jewish.
Frank Stallone, his younger brother, is an actor and musician.
Due to complications during childbirth, her obstetricians were obliged to use two pairs of forceps to deliver him; nevertheless, the use of these forceps mistakenly cut a nerve, paralyzing sections of Stallone’s face. This paralyzed the lower left half of his face, giving him his trademark snarling expression and slurred speech. He was bullied as a consequence, and he compensated by weightlifting and acting as a youngster.
He was Catholicly baptized. In the early 1950s, his father relocated the family to Washington, D.C. to operate a beauty school. Barbella’s, his mother’s women’s gym, was established in 1954.

Education
Prior to entering Miami Dade College, Stallone attended Notre Dame Academy and Lincoln High School in Philadelphia, as well as Charlotte Hall Military Academy.
He studied at the American College of Switzerland for two years, from September 1965 to June 1967. From 1967 to 1969, he went to the United States to study theatre at the University of Miami.
Career
He performed on stage under the name Mike Stallone until 1969, when he switched to the stage name Sylvester E. Stallone. Stallone had a role in the 1968 drama That Nice Boy (aka The Square Root) while attending the University of Miami.
Stallone was on the verge of giving up acting in 1972 when he attempted and failed to gain a position as an extra in The Godfather, which he subsequently regarded as a low period.
Stallone attended the Muhammad Ali vs. Chuck Wepner fight on March 24, 1975. Stallone returned home that night and finished the first draught of Rocky in three days.
Rocky received 10 Oscar nominations at the 49th Academy Awards in 1977, including Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay for Stallone.
Rocky II, which he wrote, directed, and acted in, was released in 1979. (replacing John G. Avildsen, who won an Academy Award for directing the first film). The sequel was a huge hit, generating over $200 million.
In 1981, he co-starred in Escape to Victory with Michael Caine and Pelé, a sports thriller in which he portrays a POW caught up in a Nazi propaganda soccer tournament.
In 1982, Stallone appeared in the action picture First Blood as a Vietnam veteran and former Green Beret John Rambo.

In an interview with Variety on July 23, 2019, Stallone said that a Rocky sequel and prequel are in the works. “We’re really high on it,” producer Irwin Winkler stated, adding that Stallone is in talks to script and act in the film.
In late 2020, Stallone reprised his role as Rambo in Mortal Kombat 11, as part of the game’s second Kombat Pack.
In the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, he played King Shark in 2021.

Stallone has had three marriages.
He married Sasha Czack on December 28, 1974, when he was 28 years old. Sage Moonblood Stallone, who died of heart illness at the age of 36, and Seargeoh, who was diagnosed with autism at a young age, were their two boys. On February 14, 1985, the couple divorced.
On December 15, 1985, in Beverly Hills, California, Stallone married model and actress Brigitte Nielsen. The tabloid press made their marriage (which lasted two years) and subsequent divorce very public.
Stallone married Jennifer Flavin in May 1997, and they have three daughters: Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet. At the 74th Golden Globe Awards, his daughters were chosen to share the role of Golden Globe Ambassador.
In the early 1990s, Stallone was engaged to model Janice Dickinson for less than a year. After Dickinson gave birth to her daughter Savannah in February 1994, Stallone ended his relationship with Jennifer Flavin, whom he had been seeing since 1988, by FedEx.
When Stallone found he wasn’t the father of her daughter, they broke up. Before rekindling his love with Flavin in 1995, Stallone was briefly engaged to model Angie Everhart.
