Richard Tiffany Gere, the oldest son and second child of homemaker Doris Ann and NMIC insurance agent Homer George Gere, was born in Philadelphia on August 31, 1949.
His father had planned to be a preacher when he was younger.
In Syracuse, New York, Gere was reared as a Methodist. George Lane Gere (1848–1932), his paternal great-grandfather, changed his surname from “Geer” to “Gere.” George, another of his relatives, was an Englishman from Heavitree who arrived in the Connecticut Colony in 1638.
Gere’s parents were both Mayflower descendants, and his ancestors include John Billington, William Brewster, Francis Eaton, Francis Cooke, Degory Priest, George Soule, and Richard Warren, among others.

He graduated from North Syracuse Central High School in 1967, where he excelled in gymnastics, music, and trumpet.
He received a gymnastics scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he majored in philosophy but dropped out after two years.
Career
Gere began his professional career in 1969, starring in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Provincetown Playhouse on Cape Cod.
In 1973, he made his significant acting debut in the original London theatre production of Grease.
He was one of the first well-known Hollywood actors to portray a homosexual role, in the Broadway production of Bent in 1979, for which he won a Theatre World Award.

From 1971 until 1978, Gere had on-again, off-again romances with actress Penelope Milford and painter Sylvia Martins.
