Richard Gere Biography

Richard Tiffany Gere, the oldest son and second child of homemaker Doris Ann and NMIC insurance agent Homer George Gere, was born in Philadelphia on August 31, 1949.

His father had planned to be a preacher when he was younger.

In Syracuse, New York, Gere was reared as a Methodist. George Lane Gere (1848–1932), his paternal great-grandfather, changed his surname from “Geer” to “Gere.” George, another of his relatives, was an Englishman from Heavitree who arrived in the Connecticut Colony in 1638.

Gere’s parents were both Mayflower descendants, and his ancestors include John Billington, William Brewster, Francis Eaton, Francis Cooke, Degory Priest, George Soule, and Richard Warren, among others.

He graduated from North Syracuse Central High School in 1967, where he excelled in gymnastics, music, and trumpet.

He received a gymnastics scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he majored in philosophy but dropped out after two years.

Gere began his professional career in 1969, starring in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Provincetown Playhouse on Cape Cod.

In 1973, he made his significant acting debut in the original London theatre production of Grease.

He was one of the first well-known Hollywood actors to portray a homosexual role, in the Broadway production of Bent in 1979, for which he won a Theatre World Award.

The criminal film American Gigolo (1980) raised his fame tremendously, while the romance drama An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) solidified his celebrity, grossing about $130 million.

Sommersby (1993), Primal Fear (1996), and Runaway Bride (1999) were all popular films that Gere starred in throughout the 1990s (which reunited him with his Pretty Woman co-star Julia Roberts).

In 1999, Gere was awarded the “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine.

He then starred in the successful films The Mothman Prophecies (2002), Unfaithful (2002), and the Academy Award-winning musical film adaption Chicago all in the same year (2002).

In the romantic romance Nights in Rodanthe, he featured alongside Diane Lane (2008).

In 2012, he earned the Hamptons International Film Festival’s Golden Starfish Award for Lifetime Achievement and the Hollywood Film Awards’ Career Achievement Award.

With Joseph Cedar’s political drama Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer, Gere makes a noteworthy departure from his usual movie character (2016).
