On April 10, 1936, John Earl Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Earl Russell Madden (1905-1961) and Mary Madden (1917-2011).

When John was a child, his father, an auto technician, relocated the Madden family to Daly City, California, south of San Francisco.

John Robinson attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parochial School, graduating in 1950, and then Jefferson High School, graduating in 1954.

Madden, a high school football hero, played one season at the College of San Mateo in 1954 before being offered a football scholarship to the University of Oregon, where he studied pre-law and played football with boyhood buddy John Robinson.

Madden was picked in the 21st round (244th overall) by the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, but sustained an injury to his other knee in his first training camp, thereby terminating his playing career.

    Career in sports broadcasting

In 1979, Madden joined CBS as a color commentator. He was promoted to the network’s top football broadcasting team alongside Pat Summerall in 1981, replacing Tom Brookshier, after doing lower-profile events during his early years. Before joining Summerall on CBS, Madden worked with a number of broadcasters, including Vin Scully, Dick Stockton, Frank Glieber, and Gary Bender.

CBS personnel became free agents after the Fox Network acquired the rights to NFC games in 1994.

Madden joined ABC’s Monday Night Football as a commentator in 2002, replacing legendary play-by-play announcer Al Michaels. Madden allegedly earned $5 million each year.

Dick Ebersol, president of NBC Sports, stated in 2005 that Madden will offer color commentary for NBC’s Sunday night NFL games beginning with the 2006 season, making him the first sportscaster to have worked for all four of the United States broadcast television networks.

On April 16, 2009, Madden announced his official departure from the TV booth. Collinsworth took his place.
