On August 10, 1960, José Antonio Domnguez Bandera was born in Málaga, Spain, to Civil Guard gendarme officer José Domnguez Prieto and schoolteacher Ana Bandera Gallego.
Francisco, his younger brother, is his only sibling.
Banderas aspired to be a professional football player since he was a child, but a fractured foot stopped him at the age of 15.

Education
He was a member of the ARA Theatre School, directed by Angeles Rubio-Argüelles y Alessandri (wife of diplomat and director Edgar Neville), and the College of Dramatic Art in Málaga.
Career
Banderas began his acting career in Málaga’s School of Dramatic Art, where he made his stage debut in a modest theatre.
Banderas drew the eye of Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar while acting with the theatre, and he cast him in his 1982 feature debut Labyrinth of Passion.
After seeing Banderas in Almodóvar’s 1986 picture Matador, the director cast him in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which was critically acclaimed.

Private & early life
Banderas has been a long-time supporter of Málaga CF and is also an officer of a Roman Catholic religious brotherhood in his hometown of Málaga, where he travels during Holy Week to participate in processions, despite claiming to be an agnostic in an interview with People magazine.
Banderas was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Málaga in May 2010. Dickinson College awarded him an honorary degree in 2000.
Banderas has always had trouble pronouncing some English words, as he said in a 2011 interview with GQ magazine: “The word that really gets me is ‘animals,’ I just can’t get it right, so every time it’s in a film I have to get it changed for a synonym.”
‘You look like a lot of animals,’ I modified in Zorro to ‘you look like a collection of creatures.’ I don’t care because it worked considerably better.”

Banderas and Griffith announced their desire to divorce “in a loving and cordial manner” in a statement made in June 2014. The couple had “irreconcilable conflicts” that led to their separation, according to the petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. The divorce was finalized in December of 2015.
