Smulders was born on April 3, 1982, to a Dutch father and a British mother in Vancouver, British Columbia.

She was given the nickname “Cobie” by her great-aunt, after whom she was named.

Smulders calls herself a “fluent listener” of the French language.

She is one of four sisters. Smulders was also a Brownie with the Girl Guides of Canada as a kid.

She was born and reared in White Rock, British Columbia, and subsequently attended Lord Byng Secondary School in the wealthy West Point Grey neighborhood.

She was interested in drama throughout high school and briefly studied at the University of Victoria before returning to acting.

Career

Smulders had her debut appearance on television as a guest in the Showtime science fiction series Jeremiah and then went on to have a recurring part on The L Word.

Her first series regular role was in the ABC series Veritas: The Quest, which only lasted one season.

Private & early life

Smulders proposed to Taran Killam in January 2009, four years after meeting him at a mutual friend’s party. They married in Solvang, California, on September 8, 2012. Pacific Palisades, California is where the couple calls home. Their daughters were born in 2009 and 2015.

Smulders disclosed in 2015 that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 25 while filming the third season of How I Met Your Mother in 2007. She underwent surgery to remove two tumors from her ovaries, but the disease had spread to her lymph nodes, necessitating numerous procedures over a two-year period. Smulders announced in August 2019 that she is cancer-free.
