Moore was born Julie Anne Smith, the oldest of three siblings, on December 3, 1960, at the Fort Bragg army post in North Carolina.

Her father, Peter Moore Smith, served in the US Army as a paratrooper during the Vietnam War and rose to the rank of colonel before becoming a military judge.

Anne was a Greenock-born Scottish psychologist and social worker who came to the United States with her family in 1951.

Moore has a younger sister named Valerie Smith and a younger brother named Peter Moore Smith, who is an author.

Moore became a British citizen in 2011 to commemorate her late mother, who was half-Scottish.

Moore’s father’s job required her to move throughout the United States frequently as a kid.
