Audrey Hepburn Biography

Audrey Kathleen Ruston (later Hepburn-Ruston) was born on May 4, 1929, in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, at number 48 Rue Keyenveld. Adriaantje was her family’s nickname.

Joseph was an Honorary British Consul in Semarang, the Dutch East Indies, from 1923 to 1924, and was married to Cornelia Bisschop, a Dutch heiress, before marrying Hepburn’s mother.

Hepburn’s parents helped the British Union of Fascists recruit and collect funds in the mid-1930s.

Hepburn’s mother returned to Arnhem when Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939, hoping that the Netherlands would stay neutral and be spared a German onslaught, as it had been during the First World War.

As retribution for railway strikes staged to obstruct German control, the Germans restricted resupply routes of already limited food and fuel supplies during the Dutch famine that ensued in the winter of 1944.

Education

Audrey Hepburn attended Arnhem Conservatory.

Career

Hepburn went to Amsterdam with her mother and brothers after the war ended in 1945, where she began ballet instruction with Sonia Gaskell, a prominent figure in Dutch dance, and Russian instructor Olga Tarasova.

The play was performed for 219 performances before going on tour, which began on October 13, 1952, in Pittsburgh and stopped in Cleveland, Chicago, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles before ending on May 16, 1953, in San Francisco.

Thorold Dickinson made a film test with the young actress on September 18, 1951, just after Secret People was done but before its debut, and submitted it to director William Wyler, who was in Rome preparing Roman Holiday.

Sister Luke was played by Hepburn and co-star Peter Finch in the 1959 film The Nun’s Story, which focused on the character’s struggle to thrive as a nun.

Hepburn then featured in Blake Edwards’ Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), a film largely based on the Truman Capote book of the same name, as New Yorker Holly Golightly.

Hepburn next starred alongside Cary Grant in the comedy-thriller Charade (1963), in which she played a young widow followed by numerous men for her slain husband’s riches.

Hepburn opted to spend more time with her family after 1967, and she only acted on occasion in the following decades.

It was preceded by a one-hour special in March 1991, and the series premiered the day following her death, on January 21, 1993.

Private & early life

Hepburn married entrepreneur James Hanson in 1952, a man she had known since her early days in London.

She referred to it as “love at first sight,” but after getting her wedding gown fitted and the date set, she realized the marriage would not work since their occupations would keep them apart from the majority of the time.

“When I get married, I want to be truly wedded,” she said in a public declaration regarding her decision.

She dated future Hair producer Michael Butler in the early 1950s.

Hepburn met American actor Mel Ferrer at a cocktail party thrown by mutual friend Gregory Peck and recommended they star together in a play.

They collaborated in Ondine as a result of the meeting, and they started dating. They married eight months later, on September 25, 1954, in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, while preparing to star in the film War and Peace (1955). Sean Hepburn Ferrer, her son, was born to her and Ferrer.

On a Mediterranean holiday with friends in June 1968, Hepburn met her second husband, Italian physician Andrea Dotti. She expected to have more children and eventually cease working. Their son Luca Andrea Dotti was born on February 8, 1970, after they married on January 18, 1969.

Hepburn was in a relationship with Dutch actor Robert Wolders, the widower of actress Merle Oberon, from 1980 until her death.

During the final years of her second marriage, she met Wolders through a mutual acquaintance.

She termed the nine years she spent with him the happiest of her life in 1989 and revealed that she considered them wedded, despite the fact that they were not legally married.
