Private & early life

In March 1997, Witherspoon met actor Ryan Phillippe at her 21st birthday party.

In December 1998, the couple became engaged, and on June 5, 1999, they married at Old Wide Awake Plantation in Hollywood, South Carolina.

Ava Elizabeth Phillippe, their daughter, was born on September 9, 1999, and Deacon Reese Phillippe, their boy, was born on October 23, 2003.

Witherspoon and Phillippe confirmed their split on October 30, 2006. On November 8, 2006, Witherspoon filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason.

Because the marriage did not have a prenuptial agreement, she urged the court to deny Phillippe spousal support and to give her joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s two children.

On May 15, 2007, Phillippe filed for shared physical custody of the children but did not request spousal maintenance.

According to court filings, the couple’s marriage formally terminated on October 5, 2007, with final divorce terms reached on June 13, 2008. Phillippe and Witherspoon’s children are in shared custody.

Witherspoon began dating Jim Toth, a talent agent and co-head of motion picture talent at Creative Artists Agency, where she is a client, in February 2010.

In December of that year, they announced their engagement, and on March 26, 2011, they married in Ojai, California, at Libbey Ranch, Witherspoon’s country residence, which she eventually sold.

Tennessee James Toth, the couple’s son, was born on September 27, 2012.

After Toth was pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence on April 19, 2013, Witherspoon was detained and charged with disorderly behavior.

She entered a no-contest plea to resisting arrest and was ordered to pay court costs.
