In the 1970s, she began her career as a fashion model, appearing on the covers of magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

She made her film debut in 1989 with the comedy Major League and rose to international prominence in a number of thrillers and action films throughout the 1990s.

Russo took a five-year vacation from acting after starring in the family comedy Yours, Mine, and Ours (2005).

Rene Russo was born on February 17, 1954, in Burbank, California, U.S.

Shirley, a factory worker, and barmaid, and Nino Russo, an artist and auto mechanic who left the family when Russo was two, raised Russo in Burbank, California.

Her father was of Italian heritage, while her mother hailed from Italy, Germany, and England.

She had scoliosis and needed to wear a full-body brace.

Her towering stature earned her the moniker “Jolly Green Giant” among her peers.

Growing up, Russo stated that she “was too busy simply trying to live, along with my sister and my parents – money was tight, my mom had two jobs.”

She began doing part-time jobs to support her family, such as working in an eyeglass factory and as a movie theatre cashier.

Russo grew up with her mother and sister, Toni, and attended Burroughs High School, where filmmaker Ron Howard was a student.

In a 2019 interview with the Financial Times, she defined herself as a “geek” and acknowledged that bullying in high school caused her to drop out in the tenth grade.

Career

Russo apparently began her modeling career after being discovered at a Rolling Stones performance in 1972 by John Crosby, an agent with International Creative Management.

Russo made her television debut in 1987, with a supporting part in the ABC series Sable, which was based on Mike Grell’s comic book, Jon Sable: Freelance.

Russo featured in the fantasy comedy film Mr. Destiny in 1990, alongside Jim Belushi, who played the wife in an alternate universe of an ordinary guy’s life.

Russo made her breakthrough in 1992 as internal affairs investigator Lorna Cole in the action picture Lethal Weapon 3 alongside Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.

In the romantic comedy Tin Cup, Russo plays a clinical psychologist and the love interest of a former golf prodigy with no ambition.

In 2000, Russo landed the part of villain Natasha Fatale in the adventure comedy The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, directed by Des McAnuff and based on Jay Ward’s television animation of the same name.

Private & early life

On March 14, 1992, Russo married screenwriter Dan Gilroy. They met on the set of the film Freejack (1992). They have one daughter, Rose, who is a model, and they live in Brentwood, California.

Russo disclosed she had a bipolar illness at a taping of The Queen Latifah Show in 2014. Despite her initial reservations, she began taking medicine despite the fact that she had been suffering from the ailment since infancy.
