Private & early life

Ronan is a dual Irish-American citizen who has stated, “I’m not sure where I came from. It’s only that I’m Irish.”

She does, however, identify as a New Yorker.

She had a close relationship with her parents and lived with them till she was 19 years old.

She has credited her mother, who accompanied her on film shoots as a teenager, for keeping her safe from danger.

Ronan bought a house in Greystones, County Wicklow, in January 2018 and sold it in late 2019.

She bought a property in West Cork in late 2020.

She has been dating Scottish actor Jack Lowden, her Mary Queen of Scots co-star, since 2018 and splits her time between Dublin, London, and northern England.

She avoids social media since it is “very stressful” for her.

She had previously joined Twitter in late 2009 as a fan of English comedian Stephen Fry, whose extensive use of the platform has been well-publicized, but she quickly canceled her account.

In a February 2018 interview, she stated, “I understand why singers, journalists, and other popular figures do it. Acting, on the other hand, is a different animal because you’re not yourself while you’re on set. I’m not myself in whatever anyone sees of me… and self-promotion has always made me feel uneasy.”

Ronan represents the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children as an ambassador.

She is involved with Home Sweet Home, an anti-homelessness organization, and backed the group’s unlawful takeover of an office building in Dublin in 2016 to shelter 31 homeless families.

She was also featured in a music video for Hozier’s song “Cherry Wine” that year, which raised awareness about domestic abuse.
