She began modeling at the age of eleven and began acting at the age of fifteen, with recurring parts as Lucy Montgomery on the CBS serial As the World Turns (1999–2001) and Joni Stafford on the ABC drama All My Children (2003).
Following her feature film debut in the adolescent comedy Mean Girls (2004) and a recurring role as Lilly Kane on the UPN television series Veronica Mars (2004–2006), Seyfried rose to notoriety.

In 2003, she graduated from William Allen High School in Allentown.

Seyfried modeled for apparel firms such as Limited Too with Leighton Meester and was featured on three covers of the Sweet Valley High novel series during her modeling career.
In 2003, Seyfried auditioned for the part of Regina George in Mean Girls, but Rachel McAdams was cast instead.

Seyfried has admitted to having anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic attacks. She also suffers from stage anxiety and avoided appearing in plays until 2015.
From 2008 to 2009, Seyfried dated her Mamma Mia! co-star Dominic Cooper on and off, and from 2013 to 2015, she dated actor Justin Long.
