Allen Neal Jones was born on June 2, 1977, at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carol

He grew up in poverty with an alcoholic father who was abusive.

Jones was unable to watch professional wrestling, his boyhood love, due to the family’s poverty, which prevented them from purchasing cable television.

His family relocated to Gainesville when he was one year old, and he grew up in a trailer park with his brothers.

He went to Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia, and graduated in 1996.

Jones began amateur wrestling in high school and went on to win two state championships.

Jones then went on a wrestling and physical education scholarship to Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina.

Some of his pals then encouraged him to attempt professional wrestling.

He enrolled in a professional wrestling school to see whether he had a natural talent for it after seeing his pals do it.

He worked cutting lawns and drove an ambulance to boost his income.

Career

Jones debuted in 1998 and was trained by Rick Michaels.

Jones was renamed A.J. Styles after NCW combined with NWA Georgia to become NWA Wildside in December 1999.

Before the taping of Raw on July 9, 2001, Styles had his first WWF tryout match against his trainer, Rick Michaels.

On February 24, 2002, Styles made his pay-per-view debut for the Australian organization World Wrestling All-Stars (WWA), losing in a six-way cruiserweight survival elimination match against Christopher Daniels, Low Ki, Shark Boy, Super Nova, and Tony Mamaluke at The Revolution.

For his last bout for ROH in 2004, Styles defeated Punk in a rematch with Ricky Steamboat as the guest referee at At Our Best, when TNA removed all of its contractual wrestlers from all ROH events and ROH vacated the championship.

Styles beat Matt Sydal in the first event of 2006, and the two agreed to create a tag team and contend for the ROH Tag Team Championship, which was held by Sydal’s Generation Next allies Austin Aries and Roderick Strong.

Styles was part of a plot in which he became unintentionally married to Karen Angle in February 2008.

TNA began showing recordings from Styles’ house in February 2013, interviewing his wife, a friend, and even attempting to interview Styles until he furiously pushed them to leave.

On the January 4, 2014 taping of Ring of Honor Wrestling, Styles defeated Roderick Strong in his comeback match, and he also defeated Jay Lethal at the 12th Anniversary Show and Chris Hero at the Flyin’ High event.

On January 14, 2016, Styles competed in a 5 Star Wrestling bout in Sheffield, England, in which he fought Rey Mysterio for the first time, which he won.

Styles initiated a feud with then-WWE Champion Jinder Mahal on SmackDown on October 17, 2017, when he confronted and attacked him.

Styles failed to win the Royal Rumble on January 27, 2019, as a returning Rowan attacked Styles while the referee was unconscious, allowing Bryan to retain the championship.

Styles entered the Royal Rumble match as entry number eighteen on January 26, 2020, but was eliminated by Edge.

Private & early life

Jones has been married to Wendy, a schoolteacher, since the year 2000. Ajay Covell Jones, Avery Jones, and Albey Jones are their three boys, while Anney Jones is their daughter.

Jones’ best buddy and fellow wrestler Christopher Daniels, whose actual name is Daniel Covell, inspired their first son’s middle name.

Jones got a big tattoo on the right side of his body in 2010 that says “AJ 05-03-05 02-14-07 09-15-09,” which represents his initials and the birth dates of his first three children.

In 2016, he inserted “10-08-14” as the date of his fourth child’s birth. Gainesville, Georgia is where the family calls home.
