On December 27, 1966, William Scott Goldberg, the son of classical musician Ethel and OB-GYN Jed Goldberg, was born into a Reform Jewish household in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
His father attended Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University.
His parents split later in life, and his father passed away in late 2006.
His mother is also a flower breeder who named an award-winning hybrid orchid after Goldberg.
Michael, his brother, went on to open a music club in Aspen, Colorado.

Private & early life
Goldberg was known for being outspoken about his Jewishness, which was unique in professional wrestling at the time, especially during his peak. On Yom Kippur, he famously refused to wrestle.
Goldberg married Wanda Ferraton, a stunt double he met while filming Santa’s Slay, on April 10, 2005. They resided in Bonsall, California, from 2001 until 2019, before relocating to Boerne, Texas. Gage, their son, was born in 2006.
In Oceanside, California, Goldberg co-owns and operates the Extreme Power Gym Muay Thai and amateur boxing training facility. He also owns a Plymouth Barracuda, an AC Cobra, and a Boss 429 Mustang, among other vintage vehicles.
Goldberg has a lengthy scar on the right side of his body from a rip that required surgery to fix during a college football game.
