Angle was born on December 9, 1968, in Mt. Lebanon Township, Pennsylvania, a Pittsburgh suburb, to Jackie and David Angle.

Angle has four elder brothers (one of which, Eric, is also a professional wrestler) and a sister, Le’Anne, who passed away in 2003.

Angle devoted both his career and his memoirs to his father, a crane operator, who died in a construction accident when he was 16 years old.

Following the loss of his father, Angle described his wrestling teacher, David Schultz, as a paternal figure in an interview.

Schultz was assassinated in January 1996 while training Angle by John Eleuthère du Pont, the patron of Schultz’s Olympic hopefuls.

In 2015, Angle’s mother died of cancer. His ancestors are Italian, Irish, English, German, and Lithuanian.

Wrestling career

Kurt Angle began amateur wrestling when he was seven years old. He was an All-State linebacker at Mt. Lebanon High School, where he earned varsity letters in football and wrestling.

Angle continued to wrestle after graduating from college. He earned a gold medal at the FILA World Wrestling Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1995.

Angle said in April 2011 that he was considering a return to amateur wrestling in time for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Angle was inducted into the International Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 for his achievements in amateur wrestling.

Shane Douglas, a fellow Pittsburgh native, persuaded Angle to attend the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) event High Incident on October 26, 1996.

In February of 2000, Angle won both the European and Intercontinental Championships.

When the WWF bought World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and ECW, the wrestlers from both organizations banded together to create The Alliance, which attacked the WWF in mid-2001 (dubbed “The Invasion”).

Angle competed in his first Royal Rumble match on January 20, 2002, at the Royal Rumble, where he made it to the last two before being eliminated by eventual winner Triple H.

Private & early life

On December 19, 1998, Angle married Karen Smedley. Karen filed for divorce from Kurt in September 2008, according to reports. They have a daughter, born on December 2, 2002, and a boy, born on October 26, 2006.

Angle was believed to be engaged to actress Giovanna Yannotti, who was 19 years his junior, in 2010. They are the parents of four children (one adopted).

On January 22, 2011, they welcomed their first child. On July 20, 2012, Angle and Yannotti married. On December 31, 2012, they welcomed their second child.
