Terry Eugene Bollea, better known by his ring name Hulk Hogan, is an American television personality and retired professional wrestler.

He is largely considered the most popular wrestler of the 1980s and the most well-known wrestling figure in the world.

Hogan began his professional wrestling career in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1983, when he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), that he acquired international notoriety.

Hogan had a successful acting career both during and after his wrestling career, beginning with a cameo appearance in Rocky III in 1982.

Terry Eugene Bollea was born on August 11, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, to Pietro “Peter” Bollea, an Italian construction supervisor, and Ruth V. Bollea, a housewife and dance instructor of Scottish and French origin.

His family relocated to Port Tampa, Florida, when he was one and a half years old.

He was a pitcher in Little League Baseball as a kid.

He drew the attention of scouts from the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds, but his baseball career was cut short due to an injury.

At the age of 16, he began watching professional wrestling.

Hogan initially turned his attention to Superstar Billy Graham and looked to him for inspiration at one of those wrestling events; ever since he first saw Graham on TV, he wanted to emulate his “inhuman” image.

Hogan was also a musician, having spent a decade in many Florida-based rock bands playing fretless bass guitar.

He idolized Dusty Rhodes in high school and used to go to his games at the Tampa Sportatorium.

He moved on to Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida to further his education.

Career

After more than a year of training with Matsuda, the Brisco brothers went to visit Hogan in Matsuda’s gym in mid-1977.

Bollea defeated Bob Roop in Knoxville, Tennessee, on December 1, 1979, to win his first professional wrestling championship, the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship (Northern Division), which was recognized in Alabama and Tennessee.

Hogan won the WWF Heavyweight Championship by defeating Bob Backlund, and he began his first major rivalry with André the Giant, which culminated in a confrontation with André at Shea Stadium in August 1980.

In 1984, Hogan returned to NJPW to defend the early version of the IWGP title against Inoki, who went on to win the IWGP League finals and become the new number one contender for the belt.

Vincent K. McMahon had aspirations to develop the territory into a countrywide promotion after inheriting the company from his father in 1982, and he selected Hogan to be the company’s showcase attraction owing to his charisma and name recognition.

Hogan proved his fan-favorite status by saving Bob Backlund from a three-way assault by The Wild Samoans on the January 7, 1984 program of Championship Wrestling.

In May 1990, Hogan became engaged in a bitter dispute with the 468-pound Earthquake, who had shattered Hogan’s ribs in a surprise attack on The Brother Love Show.

Hogan returned to NJPW as WWF Champion on May 3, 1993, and in a dream match at Wrestling Dontaku, he defeated IWGP Heavyweight Champion The Great Muta.

Hogan began appearing on WCW television in March 1994, when interviewer Gene Okerlund, who was now a WCW employee, paid him a visit on the set of Thunder in Paradise episodes.

During a six-man tag team match pitting The Outsiders (Kevin Nash and Scott Hall) against WCW loyalists at Bash at the Beach in 1996, Hogan intervened on Nash and Hall’s behalf, assaulting Randy Savage, turning heel for the first time in over fifteen years.

Hogan began the night dressed in the usual black and white, but after a backstage scene with his son, he changed into the traditional red and yellow for his main event six-man tag team bout on August 9, 1999.

Hogan was embroiled in a contentious work with Vince Russo shortly after his return in February 2000, at Bash at the Beach on July 9.

Hogan returned to the WWF as a villain at No Way Out in February 2002.

On April 2, 2005, actor and friend Sylvester Stallone inducted Hogan into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2005.

On April 27, 2007, Hogan beat Wight at Memphis Wrestling’s PMG Clash of Legends by picking him up and hitting a body smash on him before pinning him with his iconic running leg drop.

Private & early life

Bollea married Linda Claridge on December 18, 1983. Brooke is their daughter, and Nick is their son. Bollea’s personal life, which includes his wife and two children, was the focus of the television show Hogan Knows Best.

Christiane Plante alleged in an interview with the National Enquirer that Bollea had an affair with her in 2007 while the Hogan family was filming Hogan Knows Best. Plante, who was 33 at the time, had previously collaborated with Brooke Hogan on her 2006 album. Linda filed for divorce in Pinellas County, Florida on November 20, 2007.

Linda revealed to the public in November 2008 that she decided to break her marriage after learning about Hogan’s infidelity.

Hogan admitted in his 2009 autobiography that Linda feared he was having affairs several times when he formed connections with other women, but disputed charges that he actually cheated on her.

In the divorce settlement, Bollea only got roughly 30% of the couple’s liquid assets, which totaled around $10 million.
