Radhakishan Damani was born in January 1954, into an Indian Marwari family. His dad, Shivkishanji Damani, was likewise engaged in share market business. He has a sibling named Gopikishan.

Damani was lived in a single-room property in Mumbai. He considered studying at Mumbai University to pursue Bcom but slipped after a year to begin his career in business.

Career

His father worked on Dalal Street and after his father died, Damani also tried to break into his father’s profession and succeeded, as he quit his business to become a stock market broker and investor.

He profited from Harshad Mehta’s ill-fated short-selling stocks in the 1990s.

After the HDFC Bank went public in 1995 Damani is recorded as the largest shareholder individual.

In the year 1992, after the Harshad Mehta scam brought in headlines, Damani noticed a massive increment in his income due to short-selling shares.

In 1999, he operated a franchise of Apna Bazaar, a communal branch store in Nerul, but he had no interest in it, as its business structure was inconvenient.

In 2002, he has started his supermarket chain, DMart by setting up their primary store in Powai, after quitting from the share market.

Till 2010, the chain builds up to 25 stores, post-which the company grew rapidly and went public in 2017. Today they have reached around 214 DMart stores all over India.
