William H. Gates Sr. and Mary Maxwell Gates are his parents. His father was a well-known lawyer, and his mother was a member of the boards of directors of United Way of America and First Interstate BancSystem.

Education
Gates joined the prestigious Lakeside prep school at the age of 13 and created his first computer program there.
When he was in eighth grade, the Lakeside School Mothers’ Club utilized profits from a rummage sale to purchase a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and a block of computer time for the kids on a General Electric (GE) computer.
In the fall of 1973, Bill Gates enrolled at Harvard University, intending to pursue a career in law.

Career
At the age of 17, Gates and Allen founded Traf-O-Data, a company that made traffic counters using the Intel 8008 CPU. He was a congressional page in the House of Representatives in 1972.
In the summer of 1974, Gates reconnected with Paul Allen and joined him at Honeywell. The MITS Altair 8800, based on the Intel 8080 CPU, was introduced in 1975, and Gates and Allen recognized a chance to create their own computer software firm.
At an auction in 1994, Gates paid US$30.8 million for the Codex Leicester, a collection of scholarly works by Leonardo da Vinci.
Gates was the company’s chairman and CEO until January 2000, when he was succeeded by Steve Ballmer while remaining chairman of the board of directors and assuming the role of a chief software architect.
In February 2014, he stood down as chairman of the board of Microsoft and took on a new role as technical adviser to assist newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella.

After seeing the Altair 8800 in the January 1975 edition of Popular Electronics, Gates contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS) to let them know that he and his colleagues were working on a basic interpreter for the platform.
In July 1980, IBM, the largest provider of computer equipment to commercial businesses at the time, approached Microsoft about software for its impending personal computer, the IBM PC, after Bill Gates’ mother, Mary Maxwell Gates, recommended Microsoft to IBM’s CEO, John Opel.
Microsoft only received a modest amount as a result of the arrangement. The reputation gained by IBM’s adoption of Microsoft’s operating system would be the catalyst for Microsoft’s metamorphosis from a tiny firm to the world’s top software corporation.
On June 25, 1981, Gates oversaw Microsoft’s reorganization, which re-incorporated the business in Washington state and appointed Gates as president and chairman of the board of directors, with Paul Allen as vice president and vice-chairman.

Philanthropy
Gates and his wife merged three family foundations in 2000, and Gates donated $5 billion in stock to establish the charitable Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was named the world’s wealthiest charitable foundation by the Funds for NGOs company in 2013, with assets estimated to be worth more than $34.6 billion.
Bill and Melinda Gates were the second-most generous philanthropists in America in 2007, having donated over $28 billion to charity; the pair plans to contribute 95% of their wealth to charity at some point in the future.
Melinda Gates recommended that people should follow the Salwen family’s charitable efforts, which were chronicled in their book, The Power of Half, in which they sold their home and gave away half of its worth.
