Rob Walton was born on October 28, 1944, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Sam Walton, creator of Walmart, and Helen Walton, the oldest of four children.
Jim Walton, his younger brother, and Alice Walton, his younger sister, are his siblings.
His brother, John Walton, died in 2005.
Education
Walton attended The College of Wooster and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas in 1966.
In 1969, he graduated from Columbia Law School with a Juris doctorate.
Career
Following graduation, Walton joined the Tulsa, Oklahoma legal firm of Conner & Winters, which represented Walmart.
He left Tulsa in 1978 to join Walmart as a senior vice president, and he was promoted to vice chairman in 1982.
When Walton’s father died on April 7, 1992, he took over as chairman.
From 2008 to 2013, he and his siblings donated almost $2 billion to the Walton Family Foundation.
In June 2015, he stepped down as chairman and was succeeded by his son-in-law, Greg Penner. Penner is still a member of Walmart’s board of directors.
Walmart hired an additional 400,000 mainly temporary workers to meet demand during the Covid-19 outbreak.
Private & early life
Walton had three children, was divorced from his first wife, and remarried Carolyn Funk by the time he departed Tulsa in 1978.
In the year 2000, he and Carolyn filed for divorce.
In 2005, he married Melani Lowman-Walton, his third wife. Carrie Walton Penner is one of his children.
