Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born on June 17, 1987, in Compton, California, the son of a Chicago couple.
Although he was not a member of a gang, he grew up in a gang environment, with his closest pals being Westside Piru Bloods and his father, Kenny Duckworth, being a Gangster Disciple.
His mother gave him the name Eddie Kendricks in honor of The Temptations vocalist Eddie Kendricks.
He grew up on public assistance and in Section 8 housing. Lamar was eight years old when he observed his idols Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre recording the music video for their smash track “California Love,” which proved to be a watershed point in his life.

Lamar attended McNair Elementary and Vanguard Learning Center in the Compton Unified School District as a kid. His mother said he was a “loner” until the age of seven, and he has acknowledged to being quiet and bashful at school.
He graduated from Centennial High School in Compton as a youngster, where he was a straight-A student.
Career
Under the alias K.Dot, Lamar published his first full-length record, a mixtape titled Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year), in 2003, at the age of 16.

Private & early life
Lamar began dating beautician Whitney Alford while attending Centennial High School. In April of 2015, the pair announced their engagement. In July 2019, their first child, a girl, was born. A few years later, their son was born. Lamar is the cousin of NBA star Nick Young and artist Baby Keem.
Lamar, like fellow rapper Schoolboy Q, is a fan of the Los Angeles Rams football club; he participated in an episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks in 2016.
