Nicholson visited his sister in California for the first time when he was thirteen years old, in 1950.
He also acted in the film The Wild Ride as a renegade dirt track racer (1960).
When a role in Fonda and Hopper’s Easy Rider became available, Nicholson jumped at it (1969).
In 1970, Nicholson co-starred with Karen Black in the film Five Easy Pieces, which established his identity.
Nicholson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Jake Gittes, a private investigator, in Roman Polanski’s noir thriller Chinatown in 1974.
Polanski was arrested at Nicholson’s house in 1977, three years after Chinatown.
