Education
Kher went to Simla’s D. A. V. School for his education.
He began his studies in economics at Shimla’s Government College, Sanjauli, but dropped out to pursue Indian theatre at Chandigarh’s Panjab University
Kher graduated from New Delhi’s National School of Drama (NSD) in 1978.
His early roles were those in plays at Himachal Pradesh University.
For a brief role in his directorial debut film Sheeshay ka Ghar, he taught theatre at Raj Bisaria’s Bharatendu Natya Akademi in Lucknow.
Career
In the 1984 film Saaransh, a 29-year-old Kher played a retired middle-class man who loses his son.
Kher stated he lost his hair when he was young, thus his first role at the age of 29 was playing a 65-year-old.
He was the chairman of the Indian Film Censor Board from October 2003 to October 2004.
He co-starred in the Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook in 2012.
Karol Bagh Productions was founded in 2007 by Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik, who met at NSD and studied together.
Anupam Kher starred as Dr. Vijay Kapoor in the new NBC medical drama TV series New Amsterdam, which premiered in the fall of 2018.

Private & early life
Kher married actress Kirron Kher, who is a member of parliament for the Bharatiya Janata Party from Chandigarh, in 1985.
Sikandar Kher, his stepson, is an actor.
He was named the Pratham Education Foundation’s goodwill ambassador in 2010, with the goal of improving children’s education in India.
Kher is a staunch supporter of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). He speaks about Kashmir and Kashmiri Pandits in a positive light.
Kher received an honorary doctorate degree in Philosophy of Hindu Studies from the Hindu University of America on September 20, 2021.

Controversy
In 2017, Kher was accused of threatening to damage the career of Bengali actress Rita Kayral in order to hide a voice acting scandal involving his actor wife, Kirron Kher.
He had a verbal argument with actor Naseeruddin Shah in January 2020, in which he called him frustrated and a drug addict after the latter labeled him a clown and a sycophant.
