Viola Davis was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on August 11, 1965.

Mary Alice and Dan Davis are her parents.

She was born on the Singleton Plantation, on her grandmother’s estate.

Her mother was a maid, factory worker, and homemaker, while her father was a horse trainer.

She comes from a family of six children, including four sisters and a brother.

Davis and two of her sisters relocated to Central Falls, Rhode Island, two months after she was born, leaving her eldest sister and brother with her grandparents.

During the Civil Rights Movement, her mother was also an activist.

Davis was arrested at a civil rights rally when she was two years old, and she was transported to jail alongside her mother.

Davis is a second cousin of actor Mike Colter, who is best known for playing Luke Cage in the Marvel Comics series.
