Narendra Modi was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Mehsana district, Bombay State, to a Gujarati Hindu family of grocers (present-day Gujarat).
He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Hiraben Modi (born in the 1920s).
His family belongs to the Modh-Ghanchi-Teli (oil-presser) group, which the Indian government classifies as an Other Backward Class (OBC).
Modi is reported to have helped his father sell tea when he was a youngster.
