On May 21, 1960, Mohanlal Viswanathan was born in the hamlet of Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.
He is the youngest child of Viswanathan Nair, a former Kerala government employee and Law Secretary, and Santhakumari.
Pyarelal, his older brother, was his only sibling (died in 2000, during a military exercise).

He attended Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram and graduated from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Career
Mohanlal made his acting debut in 1978 with the film Thiranottam.
By 1983, Mohanlal had appeared in over 25 feature films, most of which featured him in negative (villain) roles.
In 1994, Mohanlal played Dr. Sunny Joseph, a psychiatrist, in the cult movie Manichitrathazhu, directed by Fazil.
In the year 2000, Mohanlal featured in the film Narasimham, in which he played a rogue with a nice heart.
