Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 12, 1964, the son of Jacklyn and Theodore Jørgensen.

Ted Jorgensen is Jeff Bezo’s biological father.

His mother was a 17-year-old high school student at the time of his birth, while his father was 19 years old.

His mother married Miguel Bezos, a Cuban immigrant, in April 1968, after his parents split.

Mike adopted four-year-old Jorgensen shortly after the wedding, and his surname was changed to Bezos.

After graduating from the University of New Mexico, the family relocated to Houston, Texas, where Mike worked for Exxon as an engineer.

Bezos was one of three passengers in a helicopter that crashed in West Texas in March 2003 after the tail boom collided with a tree. Bezos was sent to a local hospital with minor injuries and was released the following day.

Bezos decided to open an online bookshop in late 1993. On July 5, 1994, he quit his job at D. E. Shaw and launched Amazon in his garage, after creating the company’s business plan while driving from New York City to Seattle.

He took a $300,000 loan from his parents and put it into Amazon. He forewarned several early investors that Amazon had a 70% probability of failing or going bankrupt.

Bezos moved into the online selling of music and video in 1998, and by the end of the year, the company’s offerings had expanded to encompass a number of other consumer items.

They relocated to Seattle, Washington, in 1994, where Bezos established Amazon. Bezos and his now-ex-wife MacKenzie have four children: three sons and one Chinese-adopted girl.

After an “extended period” of separation, Bezos and MacKenzie announced their intention to divorce on Twitter on January 9, 2019.

The divorce was formalized on April 4, 2019, with Bezos maintaining 75% of the couple’s Amazon equity and MacKenzie receiving the remaining 25% in Amazon shares.
